The Hobey Baker is the award given to the most outstanding collegiate player in hockey. The Mike Richter Award is the one given to college hockey’s greatest netminder of the season. Michigan State University hockey has a finalist in both awards.
It was announced on Wednesday, March 19 that junior forward Isaac Howard is a top 10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as an MVP candidate in collegiate hockey alongside sophomore netminder Trey Augustine who was voted into the top four for the Mike Richter Award.
The winningest American-born goaltender
Augustine has proved his power and his capability as the starting netminder in several different scenarios. Leading the Big Ten in the category of wins with 18 total, top save percentage, .927 and goals against average (2.02), all the netminder has done since his freshman campaign is improve.
He joins the top four finalists for the Mike Richter Award alongside USA teammate and Boston College starter Jacob Fowler, Minnesota State’s Alex Tracy and Maine’s Albin Boija.
The five time IIHF World Junior medalist was the backstop to team USA’s second consecutive gold medal in the country’s history and played alongside NHL talent and Big Ten alumni like Dylan Larkin, Cole Caufield and Jeff Petry in the IIHF Men’s World Championship tournament.
The Ice-Man
Howard, better known for his nickname, the Ice-Man, was named a top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker award, the MVP award for collegiate hockey. Alongside two other players in the Big Ten conference, the outstanding Jimmy Snuggerud of Minnesota and Aiden Fink, a reason for the recent success of the Penn State Nittany Lions, Howard is surrounded by stellar candidates for the prestigious award.
The Tampa Bay Lightning first round draft pick was named the Big Ten’s Player of the Year, was a part of the First Team All-Big Ten and was the conference's top point scorer. He has a total of 24 goals, 47 points through the Big Ten season, including his lone goal in the semifinals. Sitting at third in the nation in goals, and third in the NCAA in points per game (1.34), Howard has made a name for himself in the green and white sweater in just his second season with the Spartans.
Both award winners will be announced on Friday, April 11 in St. Louis, MO. during the 2025 NCAA Frozen Four tournament.
