In a campus-wide email sent out to the community on Sunday, Michigan State University officially announced the launch of a strategic fundraising campaign, the first of its kind since 2014.

In the email, President Kevin Guskiewicz provided a glimpse into the campaign, which is called "Uncommon Will, Far Better World," with the goal to "push boundaries, take brave action and lead the way in tackling the most pressing challenges of our time."

"Thanks to the generosity of more than 120,000 alumni and donors, we have already built incredible momentum with $1 billion raised," Guskiewicz said in the email. "Their support is making a lasting impact, and I know the Spartan community will continue to rise to the occasion."

The announcement of the $4 billion fundraising capital campaign comes after the university confirmed to The State News in November that a campaign seeking donor support would be established. The campaign's $4 billion goal is an increase from the previous $3 billion goal announced in February.

Three initiatives Guskiewicz listed in the email that go beyond the university reaching its fundraising goal include:

  • Talent Activated – Expanding access and opportunity for Spartans through scholarships and student programmatic support
  • Synergies Imagined – Advancing research and community partnerships to tackle pressing global issues through endowed faculty and research opportunities
  • Futures Built – Transforming university spaces and technology to empower Spartans to lead in their fields through capital projects and new programs

The fundraising campaign, with Guskiewicz at the helm, comes after his first year as MSU president and follows a tumultuous decade at the university which has included quick presidential turnover, national scandals and Board of Trustees dysfunction.

Toward the end of the email, Guskiewicz emphasized that this is the university’s moment to be visionary while taking "purposeful action" to shape MSU's future. Guskiewicz also expressed his appreciation to the university advancement team, MSU's fundraising arm.

"Every Spartan — students, faculty, alumni, parents and friends — has a role to play in this movement," Guskiewicz said. "Your support will more than strengthen MSU, it will extend our impact far beyond campus, transforming lives and communities for generations to come."
