The Michigan State women’s tennis team cheers for their teammates during their doubles match against Eastern Michigan at the MSU Tennis Center on Feb. 2, 2025.

Michigan State University women's tennis extended its winning streak on Sunday, earning consecutive victories over Youngstown State and Ball State at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center. The Spartans cruised to a commanding 4-0 sweep over Youngstown State before grinding out a 4-1 victory against Ball State to close the day.

"It’s tough to come out and play two matches in a day, especially against strong teams," head coach Kim Bruno said. "I give my girls a lot of credit for sticking with what we've been doing and getting it done. We were down a couple of people, but everyone stepped up. It was a great team win."

MSU set the tone early in its opening match against Youngstown State. The Spartans secured the doubles point as Matilde Morais and Issey Purser won 6-3, while Natalie Stasny and Sarah Fazlagic clinched a 6-4 victory.

MSU’s dominance carried into singles play, with Ellie Blackford winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, and Morais delivering a convincing 6-1, 6-4 victory. Hanna Tsitavets contributed with a decisive 6-1, 6-2 win, while Stasny capped the sweep with a 7-5, 6-1 triumph.

The second match against Ball State was a tougher challenge, but the Spartans remained resilient. MSU secured the doubles point once more, as Morais and Tsitavets won 6-4, and Blackford and Purser dominated 6-1. Freshman Ali Blackford, making her debut at No. 1 singles, shook off early nerves to dominate the second set, winning 6-4, 6-0. Morais extended her strong form with another win, while Stasny delivered in the clutch, securing a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 victory to clinch MSU’s second win of the day.

"Natalie clinched both matches today — that’s big-time," Bruno said. "She stepped up in huge moments. But really, the entire team did. We weren’t out of any match today, which is a testament to how hard they compete."

The two victories keep Michigan State unbeaten in February, providing a surge of momentum heading into Big Ten play. Bruno emphasized the need to stay focused and build on their recent success.

"We’ll enjoy this one today, but it’s back to work on Tuesday," Bruno said. "We’ve got to keep pushing forward, tweak a couple of things, and keep at it. That’s all we can do."

MSU aims to maintain its momentum as it prepares for a key matchup against Columbia. The Spartans head to New York to face Columbia, a team known for its strong singles play and depth, in a crucial test before Big Ten competition.
