Earlier in the season, freshman center Inés Sotelo talked about her confidence when playing basketball.
On Wednesday night, Sotelo shined offensively with a career-high 17 points for No. 22 Michigan State University women’s basketball when they defeated Wisconsin 91-71.
“Today was with a lot of confidence, actually. I feel like we were playing so good and sharing the ball a lot,” Sotelo said. “We all had a lot of opportunities to score, so that gives me confidence to drive and everything.”
As a freshman from Spain, Sotelo goes through ups and downs, but she continues to give her all every time she steps onto the court with the encouragement from her family and team.
“It’s hard being a freshman and also in another country but here I feel like everybody's supporting me,” Sotelo said. “I also have bad games, but I just think that the next one is going to be better. Sometimes I feel like I lose a little confidence in myself but then, with the support of everyone, I found me again and I can play better again.”
“We see it, you know, freshman year there's the highs and lows that could go through a season,” head coach Robyn Fralick said. “But tonight, it was fun to watch her get a little bit loose and play confidently and play aggressively, defensively too. She just had so much length to our team, so I was happy.”
Three other Spartans scored in double digits to help MSU remain in control of the entire game. Junior forward Grace VanSlooten scored 22 points, junior guard Theryn Hallock added 18 points and senior guard/forward Jocelyn Tate tallied 13.
MSU women’s basketball will travel to California to face UCLA at 9 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16 followed by USC at 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
