Michigan State University wrestling faced a tough night on Friday, falling to No. 24 Indiana in a decisive 35-3 defeat during Big Ten dual competition. The Spartans, now 3-4 overall and 0-3 in Big Ten action, managed only one win across ten bouts.
Clayton Jones (149 lbs) provided the Spartans’ lone victory, securing a hard-fought 11-9 decision over Indiana’s Aidan Torres. Jones dominated early, leading 3-1 after the first period and 7-3 after the second, and held off a late surge from Torres to earn Michigan State’s only points of the meet.
Indiana’s dominance was clear from the opening match, as the Hoosiers claimed victories in nine consecutive bouts. Their performance included technical falls by Angelo Rini (133 lbs) and DJ Washington (184 lbs), along with a decisive overtime pin by Tyler Lillard (165 lbs), which earned six critical points. Indiana’s relentless showing underscored the challenges Michigan State faces in the competitive Big Ten.
MSU entered the meet riding momentum from a 25-13 win over Buffalo, where they secured five victories after intermission, including four with bonus points. However, the Spartans struggled to replicate that success against Indiana’s nationally ranked squad.
Next, the Spartans face an even tougher challenge as they host No. 7 Nebraska, whose powerhouse lineup will test Michigan State at every weight class.
To compete with Nebraska, the Spartans must improve their composure in high-pressure situations and capitalize on scoring opportunities in tight bouts. Key wrestlers, including Remy Cotton (197 lbs) and Max Vanadia (Heavyweight), will need to deliver strong performances as they have in previous meets.
As Michigan State gears up to face No. 7 Nebraska, the focus will be on consistency, resilience, and building on Jones’ strong performance. The Spartans aim to rebound and prove they belong among the Big Ten’s elite.
MSU will host Nebraska on Sunday, Jan. 26, at Jenison Field House, with the dual set to begin at 1 p.m.
