Campsites are set up covering the entirety of Munn field on Oct. 4, 2024, for the annual Izzone Campout.

Friday, Oct. 4, was one of the biggest days of the year for MSU.

The annual Izzone camp out coincided with MSU Madness, MSU's anticipated football game against No. 6 Oregon and the ice hockey team's season opener against Lake Superior State.

During the Izzone campout, student ticket buyers camp overnight at Munn Field with men's basketball coach Tom Izzo and the team. Attending gives students Izzone points, which translates into priority selection for tickets.

Students showed their school spirit and support for the MSU basketball team.

“It's really jam-packed,” social work sophomore Andrew Pospy said. “It's an electric environment with the games going on over in Oregon and Lake State, and then Midnight Madness, too. I think the vibes all-around are just very energetic.”

Watching the football game was not a problem for the campers. The televised game was displayed on the main stage for a watch party. Some even watched the game from their tents.

“We will definitely tune into the football game on the super big screen by the DJ,” psychology sophomore Kiara Napuri said. “Some people even brought TVs in their tents for the game, it is insane. It's such a big day for this school.”

The Spartan hockey game started at 6 p.m., right when MSU Madness began.

“I was watching the hockey game on my phone while watching the player introductions at the Breslin Center,” kinesiology freshman Andrew Morgan said. “I almost threw my phone and celebrated after Daniel Russel scored the overtime goal to win it.”

During halftime of the football game, a drone show was presented to all of the campers. Hundreds of drones were in the air, synchronizing and making images of the Spartan logo, basketball players dunking and even Izzo with the lights.

Izzo, as always, was able to keep the crowd excited. He led the MSU cheers and encouraged his own players to crowd surf.

“It's great seeing Izzo so fired up,” political theory junior Nik Kenny said. “He is on his 30th season as a head coach and he acts like he is just as young as the players. I think the energy transfers to the players.”

The weather at this year’s campout was a lot nicer than in years past, which have featured rain and temperatures below 40 degrees.

“It feels great to be out here,” business sophomore Brady Lee said. “The weather is so much better than it was last year, because I was cold and wet last year. It's a way different feeling. I was super happy to be there, and I feel like everyone was so much happier, too.”

Although the Michigan State football team lost to Oregon, students still kept their Spartan spirit.

“I think we do rally around our sports,” human biology junior Page Aldrich said. "It's definitely why a lot of people feel a sense of community here at MSU. I haven't been to a basketball game since I've been here at MSU, so it's all really exciting to be here at the Izzone Camp Out and be a part of this Spartan family.”
