The State News has covered the Michigan State University community since 1909, creating a space for students to find stories about themselves and voice their opinions and concerns about campus.

However, The State News has not always reached out to the public to make sure readers know who we are and who students are confiding in when they tell us their stories. So we want to open our doors to you, our readers, to meet us and learn more about our newsroom.

On Monday, Oct. 14, the newsroom will be open to the public so the community can meet our student and professional staff and tour the newsroom.

From 6-8 p.m., we will hold a presentation and answer live and pre-submitted questions. And of course, we will provide snacks (free, if it's any extra incentive).

We aim to reshape perceptions of journalism and build a bridge toward new collaborative, inclusive dialogues, fostering a deeper and shared understanding between media and the community we serve.

Your questions are the main reason we are holding this open house. The stories we publish are full of discourse between the student body and administration or between students. We want our community to have the same communication with us, sharing their opinions on our coverage to grow our understanding of what news matters to students most.

We see your curiosity in your interactions with our social media, asking how we choose which stories to cover and how we make editorial decisions. We want to answer these questions to increase transparency in our news policies and processes. If you believe something is underrepresented on campus, we want to hear this so we can expand our outreach. We not only want to listen to those who feel unheard on campus, but make them feel listened to.

We want to hear from student organizations on everything from campus safety to administration concerns or dining options.

Most importantly, we are looking to form a partnership with students, who are our most important stakeholders. We want you to think of us when you need your stories told.

The only way for our coverage to stay relevant is to stay up to date with our student body. We believe the best way to do this is to shake your hands and have conversations to understand who you are and what news you want to read.

We can’t wait to meet you.

If you are planning to attend, please RSVP with this link so we have enough free snacks for you and all of your friends. Also, you can send in pre-submitted questions here
