September has arrived, bringing chilly mornings and crisp air with it. The arrival of September marks the beginning of fall, a season beloved by many Michigan State University students.
From cider mills to haunted houses, fall offers an abundance of fun activities for individuals to enjoy and celebrate all around Michigan.
Advertising management junior Kaitlyn Beckwith said her favorite fall activity in Michigan consists of two things.
“My favorite fall activity is probably going to cider mills and eating cider donuts,” Beckwith said.
Similarly, communication sophomore Kathleen Gillies said her favorite fall activity in Michigan is going to cider mills and enjoying cinnamon sugar donuts. Uncle John's Cider Mill in St. Johns is a big attraction this time of year. BestMaze Corn Maze II in Lansing and Shawhaven Farm in Mason are also popular during the fall season.
Instead, environmental geoscience junior Brixton Schmiesing prefers the pumpkin patch.
“I like to go to (the) pumpkin patch and get pumpkins and drink some cider,” Schmiesing said.
Fall can be celebrated on MSU’s campus as well. Beckwith said her favorite fall activity on campus is enjoying the natural beauty the season has to offer.
“Just walking around and seeing all the trees change because the campus is just so pretty in the fall time,” Beckwith said.
For Schmiesing, she enjoys experiencing Halloween on campus by dressing up in costumes and seeing everyone else’s costumes as well.
With many fall events, both on and off campus, to choose from and attend, it may be hard for students to decide where they want to visit first.
For Gilles, fall themed festivals are a must-attend during the season.
“There's really good fall festivals, like in many downtown areas,” Gilles said. “I live near Detroit, and so downtown Plymouth definitely has a really good fall festivals, and it's just super cool because they have all the craft vendors and stuff like that.”
Schmiesing said she recommends haunted houses because she, herself, enjoys them and thinks they are fun attractions to attend.
However, all fall activities aren’t for everyone. Gillies said she doesn’t exactly enjoy pumpkin patches.
“I just think it's really dirty," Gillies said. "It's usually muddy and nasty, and I just, I don't like getting dirty like that."
For Beckwith, she doesn’t prefer going in corn mazes.
“I feel like a lot of people enjoy, like, going in corn mazes, and those are kind of, I don't know, I just always get lost,” Beckwith said.
When it comes to fall itself, students have different reasons as to why they celebrate the season.
For Gillies, she personally enjoys many of the aspects fall brings every year.

“It's just my favorite season,” Gillies said. “I think the nature, especially around Michigan, is really pretty, and it's just a good break from the heat of summer as well.”
