Heath Baldwin at 2024 Paris Olympics: MSU decathlete finishes in 10th place

Heath Baldwin, the 23-year-old MSU decathlete who won the U.S. Olympics decathlon trials in late June, finished in 10th place overall at the 2024 Paris Olympics out of 22 competitors with a total score of 8,422 points. 

Baldwin made his first appearance Friday, finishing the first day with a total score of 4,366 points to end up in 11th place.

Here’s a summary of the events and how Baldwin did in comparison to his Olympic counterparts.

Events summary: Saturday, August 3

100-meter hurdles: Baldwin finished in sixth place in his heat with a 100-meter hurdle time of 14.04 seconds. Canada’s Damian Warner finished first in the heat with a time of 13.62 seconds. Baldwin earned 969 points in the event.

Discus throw: In the second event of the day, Baldwin threw for a best of 43.66 meters, placing sixth overall in his heat. He finished the event with 739 points, which landed him in 11th place overall out of  22 competitors. 

Pole vault: Baldwin successfully jumped over the 4.70-meter bar, which landed him in a tie for fourth place in his heat’s event. Baldwin finished the event with 819 points, jumping to 10th place overall. 

Javelin throw: Baldwin’s best attempt, his second throw, went 67.59 meters, giving him 853 points. Baldwin finished fourth overall in the event and moved to 7,746 total points. 

1500-meter run: In his last event at the 2024 Paris Olympics, Baldwin ran the 1500-meter event in 4:40.67. He placed 13th in the event and earned 676 points, moving him to 8,422 total points. Baldwin finished in 10th place overall. 

Events summary: Friday, Aug. 2 

100-meter run: Baldwin finished last in his heat and 19th overall with a 100-meter run time of 10.91 seconds. He finished just .29 seconds after first place in his heat. He finished the event with 881 points.

Long jump: In his best attempt, Baldwin jumped 7.38 meters and finished the event with 905 points, putting him in 15th place. Norway’s Sander Skotheim jumped the farthest, reaching 8.03 meters and tallying up 1,068 points. 

Shot put: Though his last throw was disqualified after he stepped outside the circle, Baldwin threw a 14.48-meter shot put in two attempts, earning him 758 points. Overall, he had 2,544 points and placed 15th overall out of 22 competitors.

High jump: Baldwin won the second-to-last event of the day, successfully jumping over the 2.17-meter bar, while the second-highest competitor — Skotheim — jumped over the 2.11-meter bar, but failed to successfully reach the 2.14-meter bar. With the win, Baldwin totaled 3,507 points and was positioned in eighth place. 

400-meter run: In the last event of the day, Baldwin ran the 400-meter in 49.04 seconds, and came in last in his heat. With his time, Baldwin was awarded 859 points, adding up to a total of 4,366 points after day one of the two-day decathlon events in the 2024 Paris Olympics. Overall, Baldwin finished in 11th place out of 22 competitors.
