Entering the political field means navigating a constantly evolving landscape, and state Rep. Emily Dievendorf, D-Lansing has not shied away from change.

An MSU alumna, Dievendorf is a formidable advocate for social and civil justice, with a career marked by their commitment to equity and representation.

Dievendorf's career in politics was unexpected. During their time at MSU studying social relations through James Madison College, they wrote a speech arguing that political positions limit one's ability to effect systemic change. This perspective was shaped by their belief that true change often occurs outside the constraints of formal political roles.

However, after catalyzing significant change through social justice and advocacy groups, Dievendorf felt compelled to work within the system to achieve the necessary reforms.

With nearly a decade of legislative experience, including a stint as Chief of Staff for a Saginaw-based legislator, Dievendorf transitioned to Equality Michigan (EQMI), a statewide LGBTQ+ political advocacy organization. As a lobbyist and campaign worker, Dievendorf insisted on continuing to address racial justice within the context of LGBTQ+ rights. Their dedication helped EQMI adopt a more intersectional approach, integrating racial justice with LGBTQ+ advocacy. Dievendorf’s efforts at EQMI were characterized by a steadfast commitment to lobbying for change, ensuring the organization’s mission was inclusive and comprehensive.

However, after helping create a tidal wave of change outside of the system through social justice and groups advocating progress, Dievendorf felt the next step was working within the system to invoke the change they saw necessary.

During their years at EQMI, Dievendorf found security and enjoyment in the work. They never expected to find themselves on the doorsteps of politics again. However, Dievendorf felt the democracy of the state was at stake and decided to do something about it.

“I came back because I wanted people to have faith in their representation,” Dievendorf said. “I kept hearing people’s frustration and I wanted to ensure their most basic needs were to be met.”

Running for office presented numerous challenges, they said. Campaigning while living below the poverty line, Dievendorf worked tirelessly to secure campaign funds. They remarked that these struggles only strengthened their determination and ambition, providing the resolve necessary for a career in politics.

“Working in politics has been both rewarding and challenging,” Dievendorf said. “It has been difficult for the very reasons I ran for office in the first place.”

As a state representative, Dievendorf prioritizes aiding those in need. Issues such as criminal justice reform, the escalating homelessness crisis, LGBTQ+ rights and racial justice are at the forefront of their agenda.

“I’m a strong believer that the folks most impacted by the hardest struggles are the ones who should be in the office helping us make the decisions,” Dievendorf said.

To incorporate diverse perspectives into their policy-making process, Dievendorf employs innovative methods. This includes conducting interviews with organizations to gather opinions and needs, as well as engaging with locals during their daily routines to listen to their stories. Dievendorf said their approach is centered on fostering a representative democracy where they create space for those who have been marginalized from the political system. They are committed to ensuring all voices are heard and considered in the legislative process.

Ensuring sustainable change is paramount to Dievendorf. They define sustainable change, consider all voices and balance differing viewpoints. Dievendorf emphasized that while initiating change may be straightforward, achieving long-lasting impact requires significant effort both within and outside the system.

One crucial aspect of this is educating and communicating with the public about issues and viable solutions, ensuring that the population is aware and engaged.

“Sustainable change is not just about passing laws,” Dievendorf said. “It’s about creating a cultural shift that supports those laws.”

Looking ahead, Dievendorf’s focus remains on the needs of the community. They consciously avoid focusing on their career trajectory to prevent personal ambition from overshadowing their legislative actions. With the remainder of their term, Dievendorf plans to continue dialogues with individuals inside and outside the system, championing policies that align with community desires.

“My role is to serve the people, not to advance my career,” Dievendorf said.
