With the change of the Big Ten adding four new teams, MSU Athletic Director Alan Haller's contract has slightly changed to accommodate the new organization of the conference.

The rest of Haller’s contract bonuses will remain the same, but due to the large amount of merging in the world of college football, as well as the change in the overall layout of the College Football Playoffs (CFP), there were adjustments.

“The overall total of the bonus that he's eligible for did not change,” MSU spokesperson Emily Guerrant said. “But why we needed to amend the contract is with the Big 10 Conference changing, and the way the football college playoff structure is changing, there are additional games now that are played.”

These differences are spelled out in the contract:

With the college football playoffs expanding from four teams to 12 teams, the first four will receive their automatic bid with a bye week into the second round of the playoffs, and the remaining eight teams will play the first week. Haller, if the MSU football team makes the CFP, will receive a $40,000 bonus, and the bonuses continue as the team were to move through the playoffs.

Bowl games will still remain intact, and Haller will receive a $10,000 dollar bonus for making a bowl game. This is different from last year's contract when Haller would receive a bonus for playing in a New Year's Bowl Game with a $40,000 bonus, or playing in a bowl game outside of New Years for a $10,000 bonus.

“(Haller) is eligible for the same bonus he was before, if they win a Big 10 championship, or if we go to a major bowl game, but because now there's these additional playoff games that are part of the structure, his contract was amended to account for those additional games,” Guerrant said.

With the new updates and organizational changes to the bonuses for Haller, there is no change in the amount of money that Haller will continue to receive, but adjustments to line up with the new conference.

“I know that Alan is super excited about the season. He's really excited about Coach Smith and all the energy that he's bringing,” Guerrant said. “I can't speak for him on it, but we're all looking forward to a good football season.”
