Michigan State's wrestling team will be back on the road this weekend as the team heads to College Park, Md. as the Spartans continue their Big Ten campaign against the University of Maryland.
The Spartans head into the meet looking to return to winning ways after falling to the University of Indiana in a heartbreaking loss by a score of 23-18 this past Sunday. The Spartans built a strong 18-0 lead after the first four bouts but couldn’t secure a win in the following six bouts to close the meet out. With the loss, the Spartans now sit at 2-4 in conference play and 9-4 overall.
The Terrapins, on the other hand, head into Sunday on a four-meet skid with hopes of securing their second conference win of the year. The Terps' lone win in the Big Ten was against Northwestern in January, where the team secured a 29-15 victory.
Key weigh-ins for the meet include the 141-pound, 197-pound and heavyweight weigh-ins.
In the 141-pound weigh-in, Michigan State's No. 29 redshirt senior Jordan Hamdan (17-6) will face No. 21 sophomore Kal Miller (11-4), representing Maryland. The pair are both currently on two-bout losses and will look to this meeting as a chance to get back in the win column against a quality opponent.
The 197-pound weigh-in will see No. 30 redshirt freshman Kael Wisler (22-11) for the Spartans face off against Maryland’s No. 5 redshirt sophomore Jaxon Smith (12-3). Smith is coming off a 13-4 majority decision loss to Penn State’s Aaron Brooks. Wisler faced Brooks earlier this season in January and lost by a technical fall.
The heavyweight weigh-in will include the Terps' No. 26 graduate student Seth Nevills (9-6) matchup against Michigan State's redshirt freshman Josh Terrill (25-10). The most recent losses for both heavyweights came at the hands of Indiana’s Nick Willham. Nevills' loss came from a 4-2 decision while Terrill was bested in the tiebreaker periods. A win for Terrill would potentially see him break into the top 30 Intermat Heavyweights.
The starting time for the meet is set for 1 p.m. with streaming available on Big Ten Plus.
