After a dominant first showing, the Michigan State women’s basketball team will take on Wright State on Sunday afternoon in its second game of the regular season. The team will look to continue the successful start to the Robyn Fralick era.
This will be the third game out of five straight that the Spartans will play at home before heading to Mexico later this month for the Cancun Challenge on Nov. 23.
The Spartans and the Raiders have faced each other only two other times before and the Spartans control that series 2-0.
Wright State, led by third-year Head Coach Kari Hoffman, lost its season opener 67-63 in a close game against Southern Indiana on Nov. 6. The Raiders ended up with three different double-digit scorers, led by graduate student Alexis Hutchinson’s 19 points during her Wright State debut.
Redshirt senior Layne Ferrell scored 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting with three three-pointers. Junior Kacee Baumhower scored 10 points with 6 rebounds and 5 assists in the loss on Monday.
For MSU, DeeDee Hagemann scored a career-high 23 points and hit a career-high five three-pointers in the Spartans season opener against Oakland. Head coach Robyn Fralick spoke on her expectations of consistency for Hagemann this year in shooting as it was something she worked very hard on in the off-season.
“That is something that she has spent a lot of time on this off-season. You know we talked to her a lot about if you can become a consistent shooter now you’re really hard to guard,” Fralick said. “A big part of her efficiency is that she takes good shots.”
With a lot of new faces all around on the team this year, you can expect to see a multitude of lineups and a wide variety of minutes spread throughout the matchup. Coach Fralick is confident in the depth of the team heading into the beginning of a new and long season.
“I think it’s great when everyone gets to play,” Fralick said. “You know there’s not always opportunities for that in games to get some experience and get some feedback and we’ll go on from there.”
Tipoff is set for Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. at the Breslin Center.
