On Sunday, junior Max Sheldon and sophomore and Okemos native Ozan Baris claimed the first national title in Michigan State men's tennis history.

The doubles duo of Sheldon and Baris took to the road to head to San Diego, Calif. and competed over a five days for the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Fall National Championships double title.

"It's been a great fall," head coach Harry Jadun said during a press conference Monday. "We've had 20 ranking wins; I think seven of them were in the top 25. We played a really tough schedule traveling all over the nation to compete, and our guys came home with a lot of titles."

As well as setting their own records being the first team to win a national championship, the duo was also the second Spartan pair to go to the ITA Fall National Championships since the 1998 duo of Francisco Trinidad and Ken Kigongo.

As for coach Jadun, the ITA Fall Championships was a step in the right direction for him, being a new coach for the program.

"My second year here probably did not see this coming," Jadun said. "I didn't see the program improving at the rate it has. It usually takes a little bit longer, but we're excited to see what the future holds."

Sheldon and Baris both had an incredible fall season as well as a stellar Spring 2023 season.

Sheldon was announced as First Team All-Big Ten, CSC Academic All-District and Academic All-Big Ten last season. He and Baris were ranked No. 6 in the ITA Doubles Ranking and spendt four straight weeks in the top 10 together during the spring season of his sophomore year.

As for Baris, his freshman year and the beginning of his sophomore year have consisted of more than just the national title for the young player. Coming into his freshman year, he was ranked No. 5 among all incoming recruited freshmen in the country.

Baris had 23 wins last season in singles, with 12 being against ranked teams. He was also 17-13 in doubles with a record of 6-2 against ranked teams. He earned several distinguished awards his freshman season, including Big Ten Freshman of the Year, First Team All-Big Ten and ITA All Academic, and reached a season-high of being ranked at No. 6 in doubles.

"I think as (Baris) continues to mature, and part of that is just as you get older, like anything else in life, you get more perspective," Jadun said. "I think the sky's the limit for him, and we challenged him every day, and he always responded to that challenge."

The duo has one last mission, and that is the Capital City Tennis Classic at their home court of the MSU Indoor Tennis Center Nov. 12-19 before continuing forward.

"We want to be known as a team that's producing players that go on and have success after they get their valuable degree from Michigan State," Jadun said.

As the team waits for their postseason rankings, they will look forward to taking action again in the spring with their first match starting back up on Jan. 19 against Brown University.
