A man who police said was seen with a knife near Michigan State University's campus after an altercation at a downtown business Wednesday has been hospitalized and not yet charged with a crime, East Lansing Police Captain Chad Pride confirmed Thursday.

An investigation into the situation is ongoing to determine why the altercation occurred. Once investigated, the police department plans to submit a report to the Ingham County Prosecutor’s office for review, Pride said. Pride could not confirm why the man was hospitalized or which hospital he was released to.

ELPD responded to a call from a downtown business where an altercation took place between the suspect and some employees, MSU Department of Police and Public Safety Chief Chris Rozman said. The dispatch call was made to ELPD at 12:27 p.m.

At 12:57 p.m. MSU emergency alert then notified students of a person "seen with a knife at or near West Circle Drive."  Students were told to secure-in-place. Less than 30 minutes later, the secure-in-place was lifted after the person was located by police and taken into custody.

“The person was seen with a knife and they left the business and walked across Grand River (Avenue). They were seen on the campus of Michigan State University,” Rozman said.

Rozman confirmed no one was injured in the altercation or during the suspect's subsequent walk to the other business.

Students then told The State News that the alert caused tension in some classroom settings.

MSU released supportive resources for those impacted by the emergency notification and encouraged individuals to refer to https://msu.edu/emergency/resources for any additional support.
