Lansing enters code blue emergency, opens shelters from cold weather

City officials in Lansing instituted Code Blue as of 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31.

In a press statement from his office, Lansing Mayor Andy Schor directed both the Department of Human Relations and Community Services (HRCS) and the Lansing Fire Department’s Emergency Management Division to begin preparation for Code Blue, the plan in effect through Sunday, Feb. 5 at 8 a.m.

Low temperatures for Thursday, Feb. 2, and Friday, Feb. 3, are expected to be below five degrees Fahrenheit. 

The cold weather response plan provides “resources for any population identified that could be endangered” which includes warming centers that can be found on the City of Lansing's website.

The city’s last Code Blue was in late December of last year.

Wednesday through Friday shelter locations:

Day:

Holy Cross Services/New Hope Community Center located at 430 N Larch St.

Night: 

Holy Cross Services/New Hope Community Center

The Outreach Drop-In Center located at 601 N Larch St.

City Rescue Mission of Lansing located at 2216 S Cedar St. or 607 E Michigan Ave. 

Saturday and Sunday shelter locations:

Day:

Advent House Ministries located at 743 N Martin Luther King Jr Blvd.

Night:​​

The Outreach Drop-In Center

City Rescue Mission of Lansing

In the event of a shelter reaching capacity, Advent House will open its doors to handle overflow.
