Michigan State Univesity wrestling hosted University of Michigan on January 13, 2023 at Jenison Fieldhouse. The Spartans fell to the Wolverines 25-10.

Michigan State wrestling is set and ready to take on the Maryland Terrapins. The No. 22 Spartans are looking for a better result at home, as their last home match resulted in a rivalry loss against No. 3 Michigan.

Similar to the Spartans'  early hot streak, the Terrapins had an outstanding start to the season, going 4-0 in the first matches. As stats go, the No. 24 Terrapins are evenly matched with MSU with both teams have had solid seasons so far.

The 197 matchup will surely be an impressive one to watch from both ends of the mat. Spartan wrestling standout and graduate student Cameron Gaffney went 29-9 overall last season, going 14-0 in duals. On the other side lies freshman Larry Vola. In his high school career, Vola went 28-1 as a regional and county champion.

Last time these two teams met, the Spartans showed their dominance, winning 42-0 against the Terrapins. Not the best look as far as historic facts go, but an ambitious look for a revenge story, with the Spartans older and experienced standouts versus the Terrapins younger and eager prospects.

Furthermore, Michigan State does have many graduate students on the team who have had a redshirted seasons in their past, paving the way for more eligibility. Next to Gaffney, graduate student Ravyon Foley has had a tremendous effect on the team. Just last year as a redshirt senior, Foley went 29-6 overall, 13-1 in duals.

Terrapins graduate student Jaron Smith is in his eighth year of college this semester. Having an overall successful career in college wrestling, he had a choice to accept an offer to wrestle with the WWE or come back to the wrestling program at Maryland. After much thought, Smith ended up returning to the Terrapins, and wrestling collegiately yet again as a graduate student.

Both of these teams are stacked indefinitely; Maryland with a potential WWE superstar, and the Spartans with two graduate student powerhouses. The two teams will square off at Jenison Fieldhouse at 6:30 p.m. with streaming available on Big Ten Plus.
