Senior forward Malik Hall will be benched for the next three weeks due to a stress reaction in his left foot.

Despite Hall’s standout performance so far this season, he began noticing pain following the game against Villanova on Nov. 18.

MSU men’s basketball’s medical team said that Hall caught the injury with plenty of time to recover and before it developed into a more serious injury.

“I feel bad for Malik as he was off to a strong start to his senior season,” Head Coach Tom Izzo said. “If there’s a silver lining to be found, the medical staff is optimistic that the injury was discovered before it progressed into something more serious. While we absolutely won’t rush him back, the early diagnosis should hopefully result in a shorter absence.”

So what does this mean for the Spartans? Having one of their starters out for three weeks is a concern for the program, especially with the shortened rotation that is Izzo’s 2022-23 season lineup.

Another player in question is sophomore guard Jaden Akins who tweaked his previously injured foot after the Villanova game as well.

Within the next three weeks of play, the Spartans will face conference opponents including Northwestern on Dec. 4 followed by Penn State on Dec. 7.

The green and white have been off to a hot start, defeating Kentucky and Villanova back-to-back leading to the unranked squad moving up to No. 12 in the most recent AP Top 25 Poll. Hall is averaging 12.0 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.0 assists per game.

MSU tips off tonight at 10:30 p.m. against Alabama in the Phil Knight Invitational. The starting lineup is in question for the weekend along with the next few weeks.
