With the season officially wrapped up for Michigan State, there will be plenty of roster changes for the program in the coming months. If Mel Tucker's first few seasons as head coach taught us anything, it's that MSU will almost certainly be active in the portal this offseason.

The State News will use this transfer portal tracker as a running tab of who has left and who has arrived via the transfer portal. Junior defensive lineman Jeff Pietrowski Jr. is the latest Spartan to enter the portal, while long snapper Mason Arnold is the latest MSU commit.

Who's in:

P Michael O'Shaughnessy

Ohio State > Michigan State

O'Shaughnessy is a fourth year punter who made his collegiate debut against Maryland last season. He is a former five-star prospect and was rated as the No. 18 punter in the class of 2019 by ChrisSailerKicking.com. As of now, O'Shaughnessy will compete with freshman punter Ryan Eckley for the starting position next season as the Spartans are losing one of the best punters in the country in Bryce Baringer to the NFL.

LS Mason Arnold

Ohio State > Michigan State

Mason Arnold is a former walk-on from Ohio State that spent two years with the Buckeyes, although he did not play. Long snapper was an area of concern for the Spartans last year when Hank Pepper went down with an injury. Michael Donovan stepped in his place, was wildly inconsistent, and has since transferred to Miami (FL). Arnold likely will fill-in Donovan's spot as a depth piece behind Pepper.

DL Tunmise Adeleye

Texas A&M > Michigan State

Michigan State picked up another defensive lineman, Tunmise Adeleye, on Wednesday afternoon. MSU was competing against Miami, USC and Cal for Adeleye's decision. Adeleye redshirted at Texas A&M in 2021 and went on to start in the first two games of the 2022 season, prior to dealing with an injury. Adeleye was one of the top 40 recruits in the 2021 class.

RB Jaren Mangham

USF > Michigan State

The Spartans added transfer senior running back Jaren Mangham from the University of South Florida on Wednesday afternoon. Mangham dealt with an injury during the 2022 season but played in 16 total games in his career with the Bulls, putting up 18 rushing touchdowns. Prior to his time at USF, Mangham spent the 2019 and 2020 seasons at the University of Colorado, during which he played for Mel Tucker in his first year as head coach and recorded 464 yards rushing and five touchdowns in 16 games. Mangham is the older brother of freshman DB Jaden Mangham.

DL Dre Butler

Liberty > Michigan State

Michigan State added its first transfer of the day Wednesday, senior defensive lineman Dre Butler. Butler comes in from Liberty where he spent the 2022 season. Previously, Butler started his college career at Auburn, appearing in 13 games during the 2021 and 2020 seasons. During his time at Auburn, Butler picked up 20 total tackles, two tackles for a loss and one sack.

DL Jarrett Jackson

Florida State > Michigan State

Michigan State picked up redshirt junior defensive lineman Jarrett Jackson, their second Tuesday transfer portal addition following Alexander. Coming from Florida State, Jackson will join the Spartans for his fifth season. While at FSU, Jackson had a season-high of five tackles during the 2022 season. Prior to his three seasons as a Seminole, Jackson played in ten games his freshman season at Louisville.

LB Aaron Alexander

University of Massachusetts > Michigan State

Michigan State added Aaron Alexander, its first linebacker of the cycle from the University of Massachusetts. The 6-foot-1 Belleville, Michigan native is entering his sophomore year at Michigan State. Alexander played his freshman season at UMass, where he appeared in three games. During his career at Belleville High School he recorded 76 tackles, two forced fumbles and collected one interception.

RB Nathan Carter

UConn > Michigan State

Michigan State added its first transfer running back of the cycle, picking up UConn's starting running back Nathan Carter. Entering his junior year, Carter collected two years of collegiate experience with the Huskies. Carter had a solid freshman season, rushing for over 500 yards and earning a pair of touchdowns. He looked to be on track for an even more impressive sophomore showing (405 yards and a touchdown on 65 attempts) before suffering a season-ending injury just a few games into the year.

TE Tyneil Hopper

Boise State > Michigan State

Michigan State added its third tight end from the transfer portal, redshirt junior Tyneil Hopper. Playing four years at Boise State, Hopper leaves the program with a total of 259 yards and two touchdowns on 22 receptions. He earned a career-high 13 receptions in 2022, notching 108 yards in the process.

K Jonathan Kim

North Carolina > Michigan State

Michigan State added their second Wednesday evening portal commit, senior kicker Jonathan Kim. Kim acted as the kickoff specialist in his three seasons with the Tar Heels, leading the U.S. in touchbacks in 2020. He has two years of eligibility left and will look to help rebuild MSU's kicking game which struggled during the 2022 season.

CB Semar Melvin

Wisconsin > Michigan State

Wednesday evening, Michigan State added another Wisconsin Badger, junior cornerback Semar Melvin. With two years of eligibility left, Melvin has collected 20 tackles over his 20 appearances at Wisconsin, along with five tackles last season. Melvin is the second Badger to commit to Michigan State.

TE Jaylan Franklin

Wisconsin > Michigan State

Michigan State picked up its second transfer tight end of the cycle, senior tight end Jaylan Franklin. The Michigan native is heading back to his home state with five years of collegiate ball under his belt. In his first two years with Wisconsin, Franklin was a linebacker before making the switch to tight end. He has just two career receptions, both in 2022, for a total of 40 yards.

TE Ademola Faleye

Norfolk State > Michigan State

Wednesday night, Michigan State made its first addition from the transfer portal. Entering his junior year, Ademola Faleye leaves Norfolk State with two years under his belt. This season, he notched 55 yards and a touchdown on four receptions.

Who's out:

DL Jeff Pietrowski Jr.

Michigan State > Wisconsin

It was announced that junior defensive lineman Jeff Pietrowski Jr. entered the transfer portal on Friday afternoon. Pietrowski played twenty total games with the green and white during the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Pietrowski missed most of the 2022 season due to injury.

RB Elijah Collins

Michigan State > Oklahoma State

Wednesday afternoon, redshirt senior running back Elijah Collins entered the transfer portal. The fan favorite running back's time at Michigan State was a roller coaster ride, with peaks and troughs aplenty.

After a breakout redshirt freshman season in which Collins earned 988 rushing yards and five touchdowns, his usage dropped precipitously in 2020. With the new coaching staff, Collins had just 41 rushing attempts in 2020, failing to reach 100 yards. While he had over 100 yards the following season, Collins struggled with an injury in the midst of the season, missing five games.

He finished with just 18 rushing attempts. Despite a tough couple seasons, Collins decided to stick with the program heading into 2022. While he didn't quite reach the heights of his redshirt freshman season, Collins carved out a nice role with the Spartans in 2022, especially as the season progressed. He finished with 318 rushing yards and six touchdowns. In his time at Michigan State, Collins earned over 1,500 rushing yards, 260 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns.

DB Tate Hallock

Michigan State > Western Michigan

Michigan State had its first portal entry of 2023 Monday, as redshirt junior defensive back Tate Hallock officially put his name in the portal. For a majority of his time in green and white, Hallock stuck to special teams, appearing only occasionally on defense. In total, Hallock collected five tackles (two solo) and a forced fumble in his time at Michigan State.

LS Michael Donovan

Michigan State > Miami (Florida)

After sophomore starting long snapper Hank Pepper went down with an injury during the past season, the redshirt freshman Michael Donovan assumed the starting position for the Spartans. Out of high school, Donovan was ranked the 39th best long snapper in the country by Rubio Long Snapping. He did not see the field during his freshman season in 2021.

LB Carson Casteel

Michigan State > Vanderbilt

An Alabama native, redshirt freshman linebacker Carson Casteel redshirted in 2021 and did not see any game action this past fall. A three-star high school recruit, Casteel also held offers from Kansas, Army, Appalachian State, Memphis and more.

WR Germie Bernard

Michigan State > Washington

Michigan State's future receiving core took a major blow Monday afternoon, as the former four-star prospect freshman wide receiver Germie Bernard officially entered the portal. Bernard showed glimpses of potential in his rookie season, earning 128 yards and a pair of touchdowns on seven receptions.

DL Chase Carter

Michigan State > Incarnate Word

Freshman Chase Carter is the fourth defensive lineman to enter the transfer portal. The former three-star prospect (four-star according to On3) enrolled at Michigan State in January of 2022. Carter couldn't find his way into the lineup this season, making just one appearance against Akron in the second game of the season.

DL Jalen Hunt

Michigan State > Houston

Redshirt junior defensive lineman Jalen Hunt entered the portal Monday Nov. 5. Hunt was one of the defenders that saw increased playing time as injuries started to become a real issue during the season. He collected nine total tackles in 2022, five of them solo. In total, the 6-foot-4, 320 lineman enters the portal with 19 career tackles at Michigan State.

DL Dashaun Mallory

Michigan State > Arizona State

Redshirt senior Dashaun Mallory is a third defensive lineman for Michigan State that has entered the portal. Mallory is another lineman that saw increased usage as the injuries piled up throughout the season. This season, he notched a career high 16 tackles. In total, Mallory collected 44 tackles, five TFLs and 2.5 sacks in his time in the green and white.

DL Michael Fletcher

Michigan State > Appalachian State

Defensive lineman Michael Fletcher became the third Spartan to enter the transfer portal following the conclusion of the season on Dec. 3. The redshift junior appeared in eight games this season and 22 total for Michigan State. Fletcher accumulated 31 tackles —including four tackles for loss and three sacks — during his time at MSU.

K Jack Stone

Michigan State > Baylor

Freshman kicker Jack Stone announced his entry into the transfer portal via Twitter, the first Spartan to do so following the conclusion of the season. Entering MSU as one of the better kicking prospects in the nation, Stone wraps up his short career as a Spartan with just two field goals under his belt, with the longest being a 51-yarder against Penn State. In addition, he notched 15 points after attempts.

WR Terry Lockett Jr.

Michigan State > Eastern Michigan

Sophomore wide receiver Terry Lockett Jr. announced his decision to enter the transfer portal in early November. The former three-star out of Minnesota did not receive much playing time during his career in the green and white. Lockett had four total receptions and 22 receiving yards. He did not play a single snap in 2022.
