Michigan State senior forward Lauren Debeau celebrates a win against University of Michigan at DeMartin Stadium on Oct. 9, 2022. The Spartans Defeated the Wolverines 2-0.

For the first time in program history, the Michigan State women’s soccer team is the Big Ten Champion.

After defeating No. 17 Ohio State 1-0, the sixth-ranked Spartans moved to 8-0-1in conference play and defended their position at the top of the Big Ten.

Michigan State attacked the game and dominated control of the ball, keeping it in OSU territory for a lot of the game and leaving the Buckeyes with just three shots on goal.

Ohio State’s fast defense had the game at a standstill until senior forward Lauren DeBeau took advantage of a defensive misstep 43 minutes into the first half.

Ohio State’s goalkeeper Molly Pritchard collided with her own defender which gave DeBeau the perfect opportunity to net a shot in behind the goalie putting MSU up 1-0.

At the end of the first half, OSU had an opportunity to score off a header, but redshirt senior goalkeeper Lauren Kozal showed excellent goal-tending skills to keep the Spartans up.

In the final half of the game, some impressive defensive plays from both sides effectively kept the score stagnant through to the end.

Michigan State will travel back home to play its final regular season game against Rutgers at 2 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium. A win would give MSU an undefeated record in conference play.
