The Price is Right Live is coming to the Wharton Center on Oct. 23, giving students the opportunity to win big prizes by participating in this popular game show.
Contestants will participate in games like Plinko, Cliffhangers, The Big Wheel and Showcase for a chance to win a share of the $12 million being offered.
Wharton Center Manager of Public Relations Bob Hoffman said that the show was sold out when it visited East Lansing in 2012. The excitement was so high that when Hoffman was working the event, a woman saw his The Price is Right shirt and loved it so much that he took it off his back to give to her.
“It just brings such a diverse audience … Everyone was just so excited to be there," Hoffman said. "It's always just a fun shuffle. You have fun, you laugh. It's part of Americana. It's been on forever.”
Theatre junior and Wharton Students President Rayna Gold believes students may perceive the gameshow to be for more of a family audience than college students. However, with the prized being offered to those who register to compete as contestants, she thinks the opportunity could raise interest in "broke college students".
"Honestly, I didn't know that The Wharton Center hosts shows like the Price is Right and had super interactive TV shows to come to us," Gold said. "We think it's a great opportunity for new and more people or people who aren't necessarily interested in the arts to come to the Wharton Center.”
Head of Meridian Entertainment Lansing Janelle Hopkins knows the Wharton's space is perfect to set up a Hollywood-esque stage for the show. She said that the perfect contestant for the show is anyone who loves The Price is Right and wants to test their luck in the various games that will be hosted.
“The show is for everyone," Hopkins said. "We get a lot of families with younger family members through grandparents. Since The Price is Right is ageless, it's great for quality time, although you have to be of age (18) to play as a contestant. We have lots of couples that come and lots of ladies night outs.”
While the tour hasn't picked a host for Lansing yet, the team is excited to see who can bring the energy and life of the show to campus.
The interactive game show will take place in the Cobb Great Hall on Sunday, October 23, at 6 p.m. offering tickets at $44.50 to celebrate with the contestants, and even winners, of the big prizes the Price is Right has to offer.
