Michigan State field hockey fell to No. 19 Rutgers during the Spartan's first conference game of the season. The game went to overtime where Rutgers won 3-2.
Rutgers scored the first goal, but senior forward Hannah Jarvie struck back quickly in the second quarter with an assist from junior midfielder Ashley Harlock.
The game remained tied at one apiece for the remainder of the second and third periods, but the Spartans took the lead less than one minute into the fourth quarter on a goal scored by fifth-year forward Isa Van Der Weij with assists from junior midfielder Ellie Wheatley and a second assist for Ashley Harlock.
It did not take long for the Scarlet Knights to respond and tie up the game to force overtime play on a goal from Puck Winter.
It was a penalty stroke towards the end of the first overtime period that won the game for Rutgers.
The play was back and forth throughout the entire four quarters plus overtime, and MSU fifth-year goalkeeper Monique Jardell managed some impressive blocks.
With the loss, Michigan State dropped to 3-2 after jumping out with three wins to begin the season. Both of MSU's losses have come after regulation. The Spartans will be back at Ralph Young Field on Sunday to take on Bellarmine at 1 p.m.
