Michigan State Trustee Woodruff presenting the personnel actions and information reports. The Michigan State University Board of Trustees met in the Hannah Administration Building, on April 22, 2022.

Former Board of Trustees Secretary and Chief of Staff Eric Scorsone was asked to step down from his position following a meeting on Sept. 9, according to a letter from board chair Dianne Byrum to Scorsone.

The letter, obtained by The State News, was dated Sept. 9 and referred to a meeting held the same day, saying Scorsone's duties as board secretary were to end immediately and he would not be assigned any more duties from Sept. 10 to Sept. 30.

MSU spokespeople were not present at the meeting and had no additional information to share. Board chair Dianne Byrum did not respond to multiple requests for comment on Scorsone's position shift.

His departure from the position resulted in a change in his retirement date.

When Scorsone was offered the position of board secretary in January 2022, his retirement was shortened to Oct. 1, 2027 because he was moved to an executive management role. Following his departure from this role, his retirement is reverting to the original date, June 1, 2030.

On Oct. 1, Scorsone will return to a faculty position within the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources as a fixed-term professor.

The letter also offered Scorsone employee services including the Employee Assistance Program which provides free confidential short-term counseling services to MSU employees.

Scorsone began as secretary and chief of staff on Feb. 1, 2022, replacing former acting secretary Brian Quinn. The board secretary’s primary role is to act as a liaison between the trustees and MSU administration. Scorsone did not wish to comment.
