Michigan State hockey officially signed two new players to the 2022-23 roster in forwards Gavin Best and Justin Jallen.

Best joins defenseman Matt Basgall, left-wing Daniel Russell and defenseman Tiernan Shoudy as incoming freshmen from MSU's 2022 recruiting class. Hailing from Minnesota, Best is an offensively gifted forward that is racking up the points in the minors. With the Minnesota Magicians in the NAHL, he has 19 goals and 33 assists in just 52 games. For a team that struggled to find the back of the net last year, Best could provide an immediate impact.

Jallen is a graduate transfer from Brown University. He spent four seasons with the Bears, racking up a total of 42 points in his playing career. Last season, Jallen's 10 goals tied for the team lead, while his 17 total points led the team. As a fifth-year, Jallen brings plenty of experience and veteran leadership. He was named an assistant captain in his senior year at Brown.

Like Best, Jallen's offensive abilities provide a bit of hope for next year's squad. Seventeen points aren't especially productive, but Brown's offense was putrid last season. Averaging 1.61 goals per game, the Bears ranked dead last in the nation in offensive output. Although Michigan State's offense wasn't much better in 2021-22 at 2.11 average goals per game, a system with a bit more push in the offensive zone could increase Jallen's point totals.

Heading into the offseason, Michigan State Head Coach Danton Cole made it clear that there would be plenty of roster turnover in the offseason, whether it be incoming transfers and freshmen or outgoing transfers like senior goaltender Drew DeRidder. While not certain, today's signings are likely just the start of a busy offseason.
