Greenwood District Studios is Michigan’s first independent, black-owned film studio that took over the Lansing mall cinema in October 2021. It was named in remembrance of the 1921 Tulsa Massacre. The studio includes a community space where filmmakers and producers can come and produce independent films.

Founded by Lansing-based comedian and filmmaker, who goes by the name Amaru; the vision for the studio was to provide a space where creatives can show their work. “... Businesses shattering, people (you know) unemployed, and the final result is our youth not having anything to do,” Amaru said. “... the COVID situation shattered both of my jobs at the same time.”

Despite being opened during the pandemic, the studio is now on the brink of closure. Amaru mentions that their plan was to utilize every square inch of the facility to generate capital and funds for the production. Greenwood did get approved by the planning commission, but was ultimately denied by the township board.

“Basically the township doesn’t really want us here,” Amaru explained.
“... drama and things happening there that was unbecoming of the township.” In addition, Amaru explains that the mall is also not being cooperative.

As a result, the studio had to file a lawsuit against the mall due to contract violations. “We’ve had to come out of pocket and pay for our lawyer,” Amaru said. “My lawyer just confirmed that they are in breach of contract.”

Greenwood has not gotten any grants or any assistance from the city or the township. This resulted in the creation of a GoFundMe as a way to catch up bills and maintenance. “I took the money that the government was giving us … unemployment and then I went to the community,” Amaru mentions.

The studio has a comedy club called Funny is Funny, where people can express their comedic talents on stage. The comedy club has open mic nights. A full list of events can be found here. To help Greenwood District Studios, you can donate to their GoFundMe.
