Black Student Alliance, or BSA, will be hosting their second annual Black Love week starting Monday, Feb. 7- Friday, Feb. 11 in collaboration with several student organizations on campus.
This year’s theme, “The Black Playlist” was inspired by how impactful music can be in relationships.
Kenneth Franklin, president of BSA, said that music really brings people together and they wanted to highlight that in this year's Black Love Week.
“We really want to bring love together, bring community together and create bonds throughout the whole week,” Franklin said.
BSA will also be hosting the Chocolate Rose Ball, a formal event where students are encouraged to dress up. They will also be crowning the next King, Queen or Monarch of R.O.S.E. The first place runner-up will receive a $150 scholarship and the second place runner-up will receive a $100 scholarship.
Davon Ford, communications director for BSA, said that the committee really wanted to host this event for the students who didn’t have the opportunity to attend their high school prom due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Monday, Feb. 7 - Red Table Talk
BSA will kick off Black Love Week with a panel discussion that celebrates Black Love. Panelists will include members from Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., CurlFriends, On The Rise Entertainment, and Big Sister Little Sister.
Tuesday, Feb. 8 - Would you still love me if…?
This event will be an interactive discussion about mental health, self love, and healthy relationship Habits. BSA has invited a professional from MSU Counseling and Psychiatric Services, or CAPS, to talk all about love and relationships.
Wednesday, Feb. 9 - Self Love
Black Girl Fitness will lead a workout geared towards self-love and will conclude the event with an affirmation circle.
Thursday, Feb. 10 - Ballroom class
Successful Black women and Royal Dance Movement will teach several basic ballroom dance moves. People are encouraged to bring a partner for this event. Participants will be given the opportunity to showcase their own moves during the freestyle portion.
Friday, Feb. 11 - Date auction
Those looking for a date this valentines day will have the opportunity to pick a date at the Date auction. Forget about me, I love you, or F.A.M.I.L.Y, will be hosting their popular fundraiser where students can “buy” their date.
Black Love Spirit week will also be happening simultaneously this week. Students are encouraged to participate in spirit as a way to bring in the events happening later on that day.
