Michigan State Head Coach Mel Tucker said that he was going to take his time to hire the next running backs coach for his staff. After an extensive search, MSU has hired its next running backs coach, Effrem Reed, for the 2022 season.

The position was opened up when William Peagler accepted a new position as the tight ends coach at Florida.

Reed has been with MSU for two years, coming to East Lansing in 2020 as an offensive analyst. He played running back at Louisiana, a four-year letterwinner from 2012-15 while playing under current Michigan State offensive coordinator Jay Johnson. Reed then returned to Louisiana as the director for player engagment in 2018 and a defensive graduate assistant in 2019.

Reed's work with the Spartan offense in 2021, particularly the breakout of Walter Camp Player of the Year Kenneth Walker III, caught the attention of other programs and he agreed to a deal in early December to become the running backs coach at Georgia Southern. However, with the recent vacancy left by Peagler, Reed decided to reverse course and stay put at Michigan State.
