No. 15 Michigan State gymnastics both set a season-high and tied the second-best score in program history on Sunday afternoon at No. 1 Michigan. Despite falling 197.925–196.775, the Spartans held in good company with the Wolverines, who are the defending NCAA 2021 national champions and No.1 team in the nation.

“We don't take it as pressure, we take it as a way to grow as a team and keep building,” freshman Skyla Schulte said. “The atmosphere, the people, it's new to us, especially because of last year with COVID they didn't really have a (true) season, but it feels really good to be out on the floor.”

The last time the Spartans posted such an impressive score was in a tri-meet with West Virginia and Ohio State in 2004. It trails only 0.3 points from their all-time best score of 197.075, which occurred at another 2004 tri-meet with Boise State and Penn.

“It didn't start out like I would have liked to, because we're more capable of sticking some bar dismount landings like we did last week (against No. 17 Iowa),” Head Coach Mike Rowe said. “I'm loving the consistency I'm seeing on bars. Like I said, the dismounts will help us really score higher.”

Specifically in the bar rotation, which was MSU's first of the afternoon, junior Tori Loomis went to flip and transition catch on the high bar in her routine, but missed by an inch and belly-flopped to the mat. This docked her a rough point, causing her to finish with an 8.950, rather than an average of 9.800 like the remainder of the lineup.

The Spartans finished with a team score of 49.075 on bars, with no one placing in the top three. The highest scorer was sophomore Delanie Harkness, who tied for fifth place with Michigan sophomore Naomi Morrison with a 9.875.

“I think we made up for it going into vault and blasting some bigger vaults,” Rowe continued. “But, because of that, we're again having trouble with our landings. ... It's all new to us, so we have a competitive squad but everything that happens at the end starts with the beginning. They're blasting them, but we need to work on stick drills — they do it in practice. Maybe it's a little nerves in competition that sneak in and catch them off guard or ... they'd rather hop than fall.”

The Spartans finished with a team score of 49.050 on vault, their highest scorer being sophomore Baleigh Garcia, who tied for fourth place with a 9.850.

Junior Nyah Smith scored a season-high of 9.800, landing her in ninth place overall.

“Going to floor, we picked up and nailed floor. Had a near program record,” Rowe said. “Shoutout to that squad.”

MSU's best event of the day was on floor. They finished with a team score of 49.425.

Harkness and freshman Skyla Schulte posted career-high scores of 9.900 and senior Ashley Hofelich tied her career-best of 9.925. Hofelich was the highest scoring Spartan, coming in at fourth place, with Harkness and Schulte right behind her and tied for fifth.

“Went to beam and it was much better than we did last week,” Rowe added. “We kind of took it back and looking up, seeing the second highest score in program history (on the board) validated for us that we're on the right track and we can only hope to get better.”

The Spartans finished with a team score of 49.225 on beam.

Garcia tied her career-best of 9.925 on balance beam, which won her the event for the Spartans — their first and only of the afternoon.

Schulte paced her teammate Garcia quite well and set a second career-high on the afternoon with a 9.875 and tying for fourth with Michigan sophomore Reyna Guggino.

Smith also made her beam debut on the season, earning a 9.800.

Michigan swept the all-around competition. Junior Sierra Brooks took first place with a score of 39.725 and junior Gabby Wilson took second with a score of 39.650. Schulte came in third with a score of 39.350 and freshman Gabrielle Stephen rounded it out in fourth with a score of 39.275.

The Spartans (4-2, 0-2 Big Ten) are scheduled for a dual meet versus Maryland (2-1, 0-0 Big Ten) back home in Jenison Fieldhouse next on Saturday, Feb. 5, in celebration of Alumni Day and another dose of National Girls and Women and Sports Day, which falls on Feb. 2 this year.

“It's always details (we need to work on),” Rowe said. “Settling in, without slowing down.”
