The Spartans ended their two-game series with a 5-2 win against the Wisconsin Badgers.
Michigan State was leading 2-0 going into the second period with goals from fifth-year forward Mitchell Lewandowski and senior defenseman Dennis Cesana III, but the pressure was on after Wisconsin tied it back up heading into the third.
"It was a good battle and our guys did a lot of things well," Michigan State Head Coach Danton Cole said. "We got up two nothing and we're playing well ... then funny things happen, and we get a penalty, they pop one in and then turnover, and all of a sudden its a 2-2 game. ... I'm real impressed with the guys in the third. They did a nice job, and kept moving it ahead ... and stuck with it."
The story of the night, though, was the young, inexperienced players and not the normal faces of MSU hockey scoring goals.
Sophomore forward Jeremy Davidson was on fire tonight, putting up two goals in the third period.
"The guys found me," Davidson said. "Lewy (Mitchell Lewandowski) made a nice pass on my first goal and Cole (Kyriger) made a nice pass on my second goal ... It was a huge sweep for us."
Davidson has had quite the first season at MSU, scoring a total of seven goals, making four assists and putting up six shots thus far.
"I would say (this game) is up there (for one of the best this season)," Davidson said. "I think our team played as a five man unit all weekend, and we were clicking. It was good to get the sweep."
Freshman forward Jesse Tucker made his mark tonight by putting up his first goal ever as a Spartan in the third period, as well.
"We've got a great culture here," Tucker said. "You get your first goal ... as a Spartan, everybody's there cheering you on. It's a great feeling. ... (Lewandowski, Davidson and I) mesh well together. Lewy's obviously a highly skilled player and Davey puts the puck in the back of the net with will. We all compliment each other and I think it makes for a great trio."
Tucker has plenty of time to grow, not only this season but the upcoming seasons while he is at MSU. He works well with the teammates on his line and is consistent when passing.
"He really passes the puck well." Cole said. "He thinks pass first most of the time. He'd had some shots and he'd put some pucks on net and it was good to see one go in. ... The bench was pretty happy, and that's when you know a guy's well liked on his team, how happy they are when something goes right for him, and that's what you want to see on your team ... We've got a lot of love in that room."
The Spartans will celebrate their Big Ten sweep for a short while before they head into their next matchup against Penn State on Dec. 3.
"We've got a little break here and then four games until Christmas break." Cole said. "We come back and have four or five weekends, we get a break. ... We've got a couple of road trips coming up that are gonna be huge for us. We've gotta keep putting points on the board. ... Big Ten sweeps are hard to come by and you earn them whether at home or on the road."
