Michigan State Athletic Director Bill Beekman announced that he is stepping down and assuming the role of Vice President of strategic initiatives according to an email he sent to the Athletic Department.

Beekman will hold the position until a permanent replacement is found. The search for a new athletic director will be led by President Samuel L. Stanley Jr.

Beekman became MSU’s interim athletic director in February 2018 after former athletic director Mark Hollis resigned and took over on a permanent basis in July of that year. Beekman was responsible for a number of coaching hires in his short stint as the athletic director, including Head Football Coach Mel Tucker.

This year, Beekman has been heavily scrutinized for the University’s decision to cut the men’s and women’s Swimming and Diving teams and not working with the MSU swimming community to find solutions to reinstate the program.

This was Beekman’s first time working in athletics since being hired by Michigan State in 1995. Previously, he has served as the Vice President and Secretary of the Board of Trustees.
