U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin has sent a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray to request a briefing from the FBI following the Department of Justice’s, or DOJ, report last week that the FBI made errors in its investigation of Larry Nassar, according to a press release from her office.
The report said that the FBI's Indianapolis Field Office department “failed to respond to the Nassar allegations with the utmost seriousness and urgency that they deserved and required” and did not act quickly enough to prevent Nassar from committing more sexual assaults.
Slotkin said in a statement following the report that she would be requesting a private briefing to understand how the errors occurred.
“These young women have shown extraordinary courage and poise beyond their years, and their activism continues to inspire me every day,” Slotkin said in a statement following the report. “But today’s report from the DOJ’s Inspector General makes clear that they were completely failed by federal law enforcement.”
Slotkin said that she wanted to push for a briefing to understand the errors made by the FBI.
"This kind of government failure is unacceptable,” Slotkin said. “I’ll be requesting a private briefing to understand how these failures were able to occur and, more importantly, the steps the Bureau is preparing to take to ensure nothing like this can ever happen again."
Slotkin said in her letter, which Slotkin gave to the Lansing State Journal, that she was “deeply disturbed” by the report and wants to make sure that the FBI does not ignore any more sexual assault allegations in the future.
“Some of the most impactful conversations I’ve had in my district since being elected in 2018 have been with the survivors of Larry Nassar’s sexual abuse,” Slotkin wrote in the letter. “These are brave young women who have demonstrated remarkable courage and poise despite federal law enforcement failing them. As their representative, I want to be able to face my constituents with a straight face and say that the FBI will never again sweep sexual assault allegations under the rug.”
