MSU announces Jeff Hosler as new women's soccer coach

June 14, 2021

The Spartans' women's soccer team loses 0-1 to University of Minnesota.

Michigan State announced that Jeff Hosler will take over as Michigan State women’s soccer head coach following the retirement of former coach Tom Saxton.

This will be the first head coaching change for the program in 30 years following Saxton’s retirement.

Hosler has been the women’s head coach at Grand Valley State University for the past seven years, which included three national championships and five championship appearances at the Division II level. He had a record of 144-12-6 over the seven-year span.

“I’m pleased to welcome Jeff Hosler to the Spartan family as our new women’s soccer coach,” Athletic Director Bill Beekman said via press release. “He’s experienced exceptional success at Grand Valley State, including three national championships, while his student-athletes have been recognized for their performance on the field and in the classroom. Michigan State has a great soccer tradition, and I’m excited to watch Coach Hosler put his own mark on the Spartan program.”

Hosler will inherit a roster much different than the powerhouse he created in Allendale and have his hands full as he tries to recreate a dynastic team for MSU. The women's soccer team was 1-10-1 this spring and has not had a winning season since 2015.

“I am so honored and grateful to Athletic Director Bill Beekman, Deputy Athletic Director Jen Smith, head men’s soccer coach Damon Rensing and the entire search committee for entrusting me with the opportunity to lead this program,” Hosler said in the press release. “I also want to thank Tom Saxton, Tammy Farnum and Stacy DeLonge for their dedication, and the incredible example they demonstrated to so many generations of Spartans. The pursuit of excellence for women’s soccer in all facets begins now while competing at the highest level within the Big Ten on and off the field. MSU and this community is a special place with amazing people, and I couldn’t be more excited to come home.”
