Michigan State football Head Coach Mel Tucker continues to build his roster through the transfer portal, this time by adding two defensive backs in former Louisville cornerback Marqui Lowery and former Arizona cornerback Khary Crump. Both Crump and Lowery were recruits in the 2020 recruiting class.

Lowery was a three star recruit according to 24/7Sports and for his high school, Zebulon Vance, racked up 46 tackles and two interceptions in his senior season.

Crump for Culver City High School had 169 total tackles in his three year career along with seven interceptions. Crump is also a three star recruit according to 24/7Sports.

Last season, the Spartans made the switch from a 4-3 defense to a 4-2-5 defensive scheme, placing more emphasis on the defensive backs. Michigan State had also lost multiple players to the transfer portal this offseason in the secondary, losing Chris Jackson, Julian Barnett, Dominique Long and Davion Williams.

Tucker on National Signing Day in January had hinted at the possibility at more transfers being added.

“We still have more initials available to us so we're gonna look to add some players to start here in June,” Tucker said on National Signing Day earlier this winter. “Ideally, we'll get them in June, but we can all the way up until we start fall camp. We're not done. We're not even close to being done, we got a lot of work to do still with this class.”

Tucker in addition to these two players is also getting Florida cornerback transfer Chester Kimbrough, who was also a three star recruit in the 2019 recruiting class according to 24/7 Sports.

The Spartans will be able to display their new transfers on Sept. 4 against Northwestern to open the 2021 season.
