Eight Spartan wrestlers will compete in the NCAA Wrestling Championships on March 18-20 at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis.

At the Big Ten Championships last week at Penn State, Michigan State walked away from the tournament finishing eighth overall and had three wrestlers finish in the top four.

With 73.5 points, it was the Spartans’ highest finish since 2010 and the most points under Head Coach Roger Chandler.

Michigan State will now send eight wrestlers to St. Louis: Rayvon Foley, Jordan Hamdan, Chase Saldate, Jake Tucker, Drew Hughes, Layne Malczewski and Cameron Caffey, as well as an at-large selection for Peyton Omania.

"This championship weekend was a huge step forward as a program," Head Coach Roger Chandler said. "It finally felt for the first time we had all 10 guys battle from start to finish. I talk all the time to the guys about wrestling seven minutes and not giving an inch, and our guys did that and it was on display all weekend. Seeing that we finished just four points out of fifth-place is a pretty good sign that this team has started to find its footing on the national stage."

The NCAA Division I Wrestling Committee decided at-large decisions based on head-to-head competition, quality wins, coaches' rankings, results against common opponents, conference tournament placement and winning percentage.

Redshirt juniors Foley and Caffey will be making their third NCAA appearances, while this will be senior Hughes’ fourth appearance at the national tournament. Redshirt senior Tucker and redshirt sophomore Malczewski will make their second appearance at the tournament.

Redshirt freshmen Hamdan and Omania and freshman Saldate will all wrestle at the national championships for the first time. At Big Ten Championships, Saldate finished fourth, while Hamdan walked away in seventh place and Omania finished outside of the top eight.

MSU will now walk into Enterprise Center hoping to have eight Spartans walk away with national titles.

"There are so many things you can point to this weekend, but all in all, great effort and great intensity all weekend," Chandler said. "We need to carry this momentum into the nationals as there is unfinished business awaiting us."
