U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin was live from Holly, MI to voice her confidence in reelection on Nov. 4, 2020.

U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08) called for an independent bipartisan review of the Jan. 6 events at the U.S. Capitol and outlined her agenda to tackle domestic terrorism, including its infiltration into the military and police, as the newly appointed co-chair of the Intelligence & Counterterrorism Subcommittee within the House Committee on Homeland Security.

Slotkin emphasized the need for an independent review of the siege on the Capitol, with public results. She also said arresting the leaders and perpetrators of violence, like what was seen at the Capitol, is just a part of the approach.

“You cannot arrest your way out of this problem,” Slotkin said.

Slotkin said some of her plans for tackling the rise in domestic terrorism include mandatory Holocaust education in schools and strengthening the consequences of being put on the terrorist watchlist, for example, being put on the no-fly list.

Slotkin said that there needs to be a top-down approach to handling domestic terrorism’s infiltration into law enforcement. She said federal suggestions applied at the local level are a start, but states are going to need to act as well.

Addressing domestic terrorism at the local level is important as well, Slotkin said. She said she’s seen those in local communities representing hate groups, like the Proud Boys, by wearing their logos.

“So, it's not just a Washington problem. It is threatening average Americans, and we need to think about the longer term.”
