Michigan State hockey’s game scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 9 in Ann Arbor has been postponed after a mutual agreement between the two programs, MSU announced on Thursday morning.
On Jan. 23, it was announced that all Michigan athletics would be put on pause for at least 14 days after multiple, confirmed positive cases of the new COVID-19 variant. That hiatus was set to expire Feb. 7, but it looks like that will be extended as rumors circulated Wednesday that the Michigan men’s basketball game versus Illinois on Feb. 11 was going to be postponed.
The Spartans and Wolverines last met in early January for one game in Ann Arbor and one game in East Lansing. Michigan took the first game with a handily 9-0 win, while MSU took the second game with a 3-2 victory on a late goal by sophomore Josh Nodler.
This is now the third game to be postponed for Michigan State on the season. The first two came earlier in the season when a two-game series scheduled for Dec. 8 and 9 against Wisconsin was postponed due to positive COVID-19 cases in the Wisconsin program. That series has been rescheduled for March 5 and 6.
MSU is scheduled to play Michigan in the last game of the season March 10 in East Lansing. If they choose to reschedule Tuesday’s game, it would make sense if they scheduled it for either March 9 or March 11, making it a two-game series.
Michigan State (6-10-2) will now not play until Feb. 14 and 15 when Arizona State will come into town for their third and fourth matchups of the season.
