The family of Jeremy Swiatek, a Michigan State 2018 alumni who passed away last September, has established a scholarship in his name along with Swiatek's fraternity brothers.

The award titled "Jeremy C. Swiatek Man of Honor Scholarship" is currently in the fundraising stage and collecting donations. According to Swiatek's brother Alex Porter, the team plans to fundraise for the next five years.

Porter remembers Swiatek as someone who seized every moment he had at MSU. While pursuing a degree in Civil Engineering, Swiatek almost immediately rushed Phi Kappa Sigma’s Beta Delta chapter in the fall of 2014, his first semester.

“Michigan State was basically his whole life," Porter said. "He was involved from the minute he got there. He followed all the basketball games and football games, and he was volunteering a lot.”

Throughout his four years in the fraternity, Swiatek was elected for multiple positions such as rush chair, fundraising chair, education chair, and Vice President. In his free time, Swiatek participated in the community philanthropies put on by Phi Kappa Sigma and worked at MSU’s Greenline.

Porter said Swiatek was always available for his brothers, if they needed someone to eat with, or help with homework.

According to the website, the scholarship has been established in order to preserve Swiatek's commitment to brotherhood, humility, respect and selflessness as the cornerstones of a Man of Honor.

The recipient of the scholarship would ideally be active brothers of the Beta Delta chapter of Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity, who are in good academic standing and receive recommendation by the Phi Kappa Sigma alumni chapter's executive board.

The aim of the award is to ease the membership and housing burden, allowing the brothers an opportunity to experience the brotherhood the way Swiatek would have wanted for all.

“I know that he loved East Lansing, he loved being up there. Porter said. “Lots of people came from East Lansing to come to his funeral, and it’s clear that he touched a lot of people there. I know he was very proud of being a Spartan.”
