Volleyball announces four recruits to join for 2021 season

November 12, 2020

The Michigan State volleyball team announced Wednesday, as part of National Signing Day, four recruits that will be joining the team for the 2021 season.

The four include setter Juila Bishop, defensive specialist Grace Danziger, and middle blockers Aubrey O’Gorman and Abby Olin. All four of the Spartan commits are from Michigan.

"The 2021 freshman class will be strong, and it will complement our returning roster in every category," head coach Cathy George said in a release. "With three of four of our newcomers being finalists for Miss Volleyball, we feel like we got some of the best talent in the state to come to East Lansing. The combination of skill, experience and athleticism will serve MSU well throughout their collegiate careers, and we're excited to see them continue to grow and develop."

The class is another solid get for George and is expected to be the Spartans’ fifth-straight top-15 recruiting class in the country.

Bishop, a Dearborn, Michigan native, is a two sport varsity athlete at Mercy High School, juggling between varsity basketball and volleyball. She has racked up over 5,000 career assists and is a four year letter winner at her school.

The No. 20 ranked player in the country by PrepVolleyball led her team to a state championship in 2019 while being a 2020 Miss Michigan Volleyball Finalist.

"Julia Bishop will come to MSU with a long list of accolades but it is her demeanor and grittiness that sticks out to the coaching staff the most. She finds ways to win no matter what the challenge. This quality along with her location, leadership and team-first attitude will certainly make an impact on the Spartans for years to come,” George said.

O’Gorman, a 6-foot-3-inch Lake Odessa, Michigan native, was also a 2020 Miss Michigan Volleyball Finalist and ranked No. 50 in the PrepVolleyball top 150. She was an unanimous first team All-State selection in 2018 and 2019 and third team selection in 2017 while leading her school to three straight MHSAA final fours.

"Aubrey is an intense competitor and a strong leader. We have had the opportunity to watch her growth and development over the years. Aubrey's quickness, length, and tireless work ethic will provide quality depth in the middle blocker position. We are excited about both the tangible and intangibles that Aubrey will add to our team culture and program,” George said.

Olin, a 6-foot-3-inch Coopersville, Michigan native, was also a 2020 Miss Michigan Volleyball Finalist and a first team All-State honoree in 2019. She is the Coopersville High School record holder in blocks and kills, and played club volleyball at Inside Out.

"Abby Olin is a hidden gem and has been away from the mainstream club circuit. Abby possesses a great deal of athleticism, jumping ability, and a natural feel for the game. We anticipate her game to grow exponentially once she is surrounded and competing daily with top-level talent. She has the ability to play all three front row positions, which will strengthen our offensive corps and give us flexibility to use her athleticism as needed,” George said.

The final MSU signee, Grace Danziger, was a club teammate of Bishop’s playing for Michigan Elite. The East Lansing native was an All-Conference selection in 2018 and 2019. She also played one year of varsity softball her freshman year.

“Grace Danziger is a Spartan through and through. She has attended more camps than I can remember and caught the eye of our coaching staff. Her continued improvements and her relentless pursuit of knowledge of the game made her an easy choice to help strengthen our defensive corps. Grace will always give us her max, and we know that will translate into making important contributions in the future,” George said.
