Campus on Sept. 18, 2020. MSU has put up large posters around campus to encourage students and the community to practice social distancing and to wear masks.

According to an email sent to faculty, President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. approved a No Record-COVID19 grading policy, or NR-C, that was recommended to him by the academic governance.

Students who earn below a 2.0 will have the option to have their grade converted to NR-C. 0.0 will automatically be changed to NR-C. Students that earn a 1.5 or 1.0 in a class but opt to convert their grade to NR-C will not keep their credit in the course.

"MSU shall establish and implement a substitute grade of NR-C (No Record-COVID19) for all grades of 1.5, 1.0 or 0.0 earned during Fall Semester 2020. Grades of 0.0 will automatically be replaced with NR-C; grades ... 1.0 or 1.5 will be replaced with NR-C is the student so chooses," the policy says, according to an email from a faculty member.

Grades converted to NR-C will be dropped from students’ transcripts and will not affect their cumulative GPA. Students may also retake the course without it impacting their 20 credit retake cap. There will be a form that students have to fill out if they want their grade converted.

Last spring the satisfactory or unsatisfactory grading system that was put in place allowed students to hide passing or failing grades on transcripts, no matter what the grade was. It also allowed students to keep the total credits.

The University of Michigan implemented a similar system this fall.

The university could not immediately be reached for comment.

Wednesday at 8 p.m. is the last day for MSU students to drop classes with no grade reported.
