East Lansing Library introduced its first and long-awaited pop-up library van in a Facebook post last Thursday. Residents and library patrons will now be able to visit and use the new pop-up library to check out the books, DVDs, CDs and audiobooks that have been loaded on the van.
"This has been a project for the last four or five years for the library, where we've been raising money for it," East Lansing Public Library Director Kristin Shelley said. "We came up with the idea because it's a way to make the library even more accessible to the community, and so that the community had even more access points or touchpoints with the library."
The van is also equipped with a WiFi router so staff can check out books and for community members to use. The van also has electricity which they hope to use with a 3D printer in the future.
"Now that we are in deep with COVID-19, I think it'll be great," Shelley said. "We won't be able to do all the things that we wanted to do with it right away, because our plan was to go out to the art festival, the Jazz Festival, the farmers market and different festivals around East Lansing, and to the schools and different neighborhoods. But we will be able to go out into parks and have it parked there and people can come and see it and get materials. And we will take it to the retirement communities."
The van will be placed at various locations in East Lansing, ELPL will be posting updates on their Facebook page as to when and where the pop-up library can be found.
