Michigan State Athletics along with MSU Vote, the Michigan Department of State, and local election officials are hosting a Voter Registration Rally tomorrow night, Sept. 22 in celebration of National Voter Registration Day. The event will be held virtually via Zoom starting at 7:30 p.m. and is open to all MSU students, faculty and staff, and members of the community.
The rally will kick off with a speech from MSU men’s basketball Head Coach Tom Izzo followed by Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson addressing registration and voting basics. Other guest speakers including Michigan State President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. and East Lansing City Clerk Jennifer Shuster will speak as well. MSU community liaison Suchitra Webster will moderate the event.
Topics that will be discussed include:
- How to check if you are registered to vote and how to register if you are not
- Checks on if your information is accurate
- How to get an absentee ballot
- How to vote in East Lansing
Secretary Benson and City Clerk Shuster will also host a question and answer session.
The planning of this event started earlier this month when a partnership with Michigan State Athletics and local government officials was established with the goal of encouraging civic engagement. Other planned events as result of this partnership include early voting town halls and a satellite voting location at the Hannah Community Center on the Michigan State campus beginning Oct. 5.
