On July 30-31, MSU tested 127 student-athletes and seven have tested positive for COVID-19 with zero new cases among the 50 staff members tested.

According to the release, MSU has conducted over 800 tests on student-athletes and staff, with 651 total tests administered on student-athletes and 30 positive results since June 15. The positivity rate for tested student-athletes sits at approximately 4.6%. With the staff, there have been more than 150 tests administered, and five positive tests, for a 3.3% positivity rate.

The announcement today follows an email from MSU President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. encouraging students to stay home, if they can live safely and study successfully there. Students can “Learn From Home” with the option to back out of their university housing contract by Aug. 5 at 11:59 p.m.

Michigan State football is set to end its two-week quarantine of its players and staff on Aug. 4, after four staff members and 16 student-athletes tested positive for COVID-19. It is unclear whether that quarantine will end as scheduled after these seven positive tests in the Michigan State athletic program.

MSU will continue to provide quarantine housing, and daily check-ins for athletes who have tested positive for the virus. Before the student-athletes can return to practice, further testing and follow-ups by a physician will be required according to the release.

Earlier today, Northwestern’s football program joined Michigan State, Ohio State, Indiana, and Rutgers as teams in the Big Ten to temporarily shut down football activities after positive COVID-19 tests. Indiana and Ohio State have since returned to workouts.

The NCAA Board of Governors are set to meet for a regularly scheduled meeting on Aug. 4 where this will surely be discussed.
