2021 five-star shooting guard Max Christie had verbally committed to Michigan State after fielding offers from Villanova, Virginia, Purdue and Ohio State. Christie joins 2022 five-star forward Emoni Bates as the second five-star recruit to join Tom Izzo’s squad in the last week when Bates announced his verbal commitment last Monday.

"My relationship with coach Izzo was great," Christie said to Fox Sports' Andy Katz. "It was a place that I was needed, and a place I wanted to go to."

Listed at 6-foot-6, Christie draws comparisons to former Michigan State guard Gary Harris by 24/7 Sports as a guard with length, athleticism and a knock down jump shot in his arsenal.

Christie is currently set to take up the final scholarship on Michigan State’s roster, meaning that for Christie to take the floor with Bates someone must depart from the program via transfer or draft to make room for Bates if he were to reclassify to 2021.

Christie is currently ranked by 24/7 sports as the No. 1 shooting guard in the 2021 class, and the 13th best player overall. The five-star guard from Rolling Meadows, Illinois will join Pierre Brooks as the second recruit in the 2021 class.

"It was just that gut feeling that I felt like it was right for me just to be able to go there and experience college life," Christie said. "I think Coach Izzo, his staff and my teammates can push me to be the person I want to be not only on, but off of the court."
