Two student-athletes at Michigan State tested positive for COVID-19 on June 22 in a second round of testing for student-athletes returning to campus for voluntary workouts, according to a statement from MSU Athletics shared by the Detroit Free Press. The two student-athletes were the only two to test positive for COVID-19 out of 114 other student-athletes from the football, men’s and women’s basketball, and volleyball teams. It is unclear what teams the two positive tests came from.

These two new cases come after one student-athlete tested positive in the first round of testing for COVID-19 on June 15th. Athletes who tested negative in the first two rounds of testing will be allowed to begin voluntary workouts. Not included in the second round of testing was the individual who tested positive for COVID-19 in the first round of testing, the three roommates of the individual who tested positive and individuals who arrived on June 8 for rehab who had already been tested twice.

According to the press release, no athletic department staff tested positive for COVID-19 in the two rounds of testing. One student-athlete who came into contact with an individual who tested positive for COVID-19 will have to self isolate for another 10-14 days before returning as any student-athlete who tested positive must undergo 10-14 days of quarantine according to the statement.

Student-athletes returned to campus on June 14 and had two rounds of testing, one June 15 and another June 22, to be cleared to begin voluntary workouts. Incoming freshmen for the football team will be able to come onto campus starting June 28 and hockey will be able to return July 6.
