Michigan State men's soccer falls to Oakland

October 23, 2019

The Spartans (3-8-3) were on the wrong end of a shutout once again on Tuesday, as they fell to the Oakland Golden Grizzlies (7-6-2) one to nothing. The green and white have failed to score a goal in six of their eight losses this season and, with just three games left in the regular season, the offense is running out of time to find answers.

The lone goal of this game came at 45:44, when sophomore defender and forward Luke Morrell put home his second of the season past Spartan goalkeeper Hunter Morse. Morse, a redshirt sophomore, has been the least of the team’s worries this season, and figures to be a reliable fixture between the pipes for the next couple of years.

It was a chippy game between the in-state opponents, as there were 22 fouls combined between the two teams. The Spartans applied most of their pressure in the second half, outshooting the Golden Grizzlies 8-4, but they couldn’t find a way to slip anything past Oakland goalkeeper Liam McQueenie.

Looking ahead for the team, road games against Northwestern and Michigan await before they close out the season at home against Indiana on Nov. 3. The Big Ten Tournament is set to begin Nov. 10, and the team will look to create momentum with the three conference games before then.

If the green and white want to come anywhere close to replicating the magic they created last season, someone is going to have to step up and provide a spark on a stagnant offense.
