On Thursday, the Associated Students of Michigan State University, or ASMSU, sat for a General Assembly meeting to discuss the reallocation of bike-share funds, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, protocol on campus and constituent communication.
Recently, ASMSU discontinued their bike-share program due to declining users and increased competition from scooter companies, such as Lime.
As a result, the bike share account balance of $32,709.91 was not being used. To resolve this issue, a bill was passed to allocate $30,000 from the bike share fund to the general fund to be used for other ASMSU operations.
The remaining $2,709.91 will remain in the bike share fund to cover the costs of removing five bike racks.
A bill was also proposed which would require MSU to notify ASMSU of ICE’s presence on campus at least two weeks in advance. Students can sign up for alerts via the MSU alert system.
The bill also requires ICE agents to be escorted on campus by MSUPD. The bill passed unanimously.
Representatives also discussed possible solutions to make communication with constituents easier and more accessible.
Some of the proposed ideas included using the mobile app Wildfire, and encouraging representatives to attend student council meetings.
