Michigan State football may have some extra prepping to do for its upcoming matchup against Indiana (3:30 p.m., BTN).

At quarterback, the Spartans start a well-established fifth-year senior in Brian Lewerke. The Hoosiers, on the other hand, don't know who will be under center when they travel to East Lansing this Saturday.

Redshirt Freshman Michael Penix Jr. hasn't played since Indiana's 52-0 win over Eastern Illinois on Sept. 7 due to a shoulder injury. In stepped junior Peyton Ramsey, a capable thrower with tons of experience.

"We'll see who goes, both those guys are very, very capable players and have done good things for them," Michigan State Head Coach Mark Dantonio said in his Tuesday press conference.

In two starts this season, against Connecticut and Ohio State, Ramsey has thrown three touchdowns, all coming against the Huskies, and two interceptions. He added two touchdowns in relief against EIU.

Ramsey, a Cincinnati native, has accumulated 20 starts in his career, including two against Michigan State. In those games, he's thrown for two touchdowns and two interceptions, all of which came in Michigan State's 35-21 win in Bloomington last season.

In the Hoosiers' first two games, against Eastern Illinois and Ball State, Penix Jr. threw for over 500 yards and three touchdowns as well as two interceptions.

Dantonio said that the Spartans are fully prepping for both quarterbacks knowing each have skills that can test the Spartan defense.

"I think you've got to take both into consideration," Dantonio said. "I know Penix [Jr.] is coming off an injury and he hasn't played and maybe it's a shoulder injury or an arm injury. So, we've got to take that into consideration with everything.

"But I also think Peyton Ramsey has done a great job. He's a gamer. He knows where to go with the ball. He gives you scramble ability. He understands the defenses he's reading. Penix [Jr.] is a very athletic guy. We haven't experienced him as much, so we don't really know, but we've seen him play and make plays, and he can take off with it."

Depth chart notes:

There were no major changes in Michigan State's depth chart for this week's matchup against the Hoosiers. The Spartans will stick with the same offensive line that played at Northwestern, with Tyler Higby at left tackle, Luke Campbell at left guard, Matt Allen at center, Matt Carrick at right guard and Jordan Reid at right tackle.

The only noticeable changes came in the special teams unit, a struggle spot to begin the season for the Spartans. Kickoff duties will be Cole Hahn or Evan Morris. Hahn played in MSU's game against Tulsa and Northwestern while Morris played against Western Michigan and Arizona State. After Cody White fumbled two punts against the Wildcats, one of which was recovered by MSU, it will either be him or the senior receiver or Brandon Sowards at that position this Saturday. Sowards returned two punts for 26 yards against Northwestern.

Ohio nights:

It has been known for a while that when the Spartans take on No. 5 Ohio State in Columbus on Oct. 5, it will be yet another night game with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m. But what wasn't known, until Sunday, was that the game will be televised on ABC.

The Buckeyes have won each of the last three meetings against Michigan State, including a 48-3 drubbing in 2017, the last time the Spartans traveled to Ohio State.
