The Michigan State women’s golf team claimed the fifth place at the 2019 Big Ten Championships. The 19th-ranked Spartans were only six-strokes off of the lead before the final round.

Their performance on Sunday pulled them within two of the three teams in second place including Indiana, Illinois and Purdue. Ohio State won it all with 1-under-par 575.

The Spartans were 5-under-par 283 in Sunday’s final round at TPC River’s Bend and finished 4-over-par 580 (297-283). The event was cut short to 36 holes due to rain and unplayable course conditions Saturday. This was the 19th time in the past 20 seasons the team has placed in the top five in the conference championships.

Some stars of the tournament include junior Paz Marfa Sans, who placed fourth in her best finish ever at a league championship with 3-under-par 141 (74-67),  junior Allyson Geer-Park who tied for 18th with 2-over-par 146 (74-72), and Sydney Naro with her conference championships debut tying for 22nd place with a 3-over-par 147 (75-72).

The NCAA Regionals are the next stop for the Spartans, occurring from May 6-8. Michigan State will host the tournament at Forest Akers West. The field for the NCAA Tournament will be revealed on Wednesday.
