Hirose signs entry-level deal with Detroit, named finalist for Big Ten

Michigan State’s standout junior forward Taro Hirose saw his Hobey Award-worthy efforts come to fruition on Tuesday as he secured an entry-level contract with the Detroit Red Wings. 

The 22-year-old phenom agreed to terms with the Red Wings for two years on his entry-level deal, one that will likely prompt him to forgo his senior season to begin his professional career in Hockeytown’s organization. 

Hirose, who produced his best collegiate campaign this year, led MSU to a 12-19-5 record overall. MSU’s most valuable player will depart from East Lansing after leading his team to multiple wins over rival Michigan in an integral season of progression for coach Danton Cole’s program. 

Not only did he lead the Big Ten in total with 34 total points, but he topped all Division 1 players, posting a total of 50 points on the season. Most recognized for his facilitation in the offensive zone, the Calgary, Alberta native also led the nation in assists with 35.

The Spartans’ playmaker totaled 116 points over his three years in East Lansing while appearing in 106 games.

Hirose can potentially make a final contribution to his collegiate career as he became a finalist for the upcoming Big Ten Player of the Year Award.He is joined by Michigan’s Quinn Hughes and Ohio State’s Mason Jobst as the three await the award’s announcement next week.
