Report: Popped balloons cause U of M shooter scare, no ongoing threat

March 16, 2019

There is no ongoing threat to the community after unconfirmed reports of an active shooter near the University of Michigan's Mason Hall came in late Saturday afternoon.

The false alarm was raised by teenagers popping balloons and screaming, according to a Local 4 WDIV Detroit report.

The U of M emergency alert system sent out an update at 6:37 p.m. stating: "There continues to be no indication of an active threat to the community. Police continue to investigate. Please stay away from Angell and Mason Halls."

The university sent out a “run, hide, fight” notification through its emergency alert system at roughly 5 p.m. Saturday.

The Michigan Daily reported on Twitter that officers were on the scene at both Mason Hall and the undergraduate library.

The university's Division of Public Safety and Security requested everyone stay away from those buildings and surrounding locations. According to the Washtenaw County Sheriff, Police and Fire audio feed and the Michigan Daily, people barricaded themselves in the undergraduate library.

For real-time updates, listen to the police audio feed.

This story was updated once the situation was found to be a false alarm and to correct an errant report that an all-clear was given.
